Rangers close in on Steven Gerrard’s next signing – talks at advanced stage

|

Rangers are closing in on Steven Gerrard’s latest signing, with The Scottish Sun reporting this morning that talks to bring Greg Stewart to Ibrox are at an advanced stage.

The paper say that Stewart’s arrival is just the latest part of the manager’s strategy to fill the squad with British players as he looks to build a team capable of mounting a title challenge on Celtic next season.

The 29-year-old’s current deal at Birmingham City expires at the end of the season, meaning Rangers can tie him down to a pre-contract imminently.

Currently on loan at Aberdeen, the attacker has scored nine goals this season, eight of which came for Kilmarnock prior to the January transfer window.

Stewart is one of three players on their way to Ibrox this summer before the transfer window even opens, with deals for Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie already completed, according to the report.

There will be hesitation from some Rangers supporters with regards to Stewart, but he has a track record of goals and assists in the Scottish top-flight and could an effective link between midfield and attack next term.

Hopefully surrounded by better players he can put his recent poor Dons form behind him and become a hit at Ibrox.
