Charlie McCann is very much the modern day defensive midfielder, more about intelligence than physicality.

If you’ve not seen him playing for the B team or seen the numerous YouTube videos then the easiest thing to do is give you a comparison of who he is most similar to.

Think Steven Davis or Billy Gilmour.

Comfortable in possession at either end of the park, doesn’t waste a pass and is always available to the receive the ball no matter the pressure that he might be under.

After an impressive pre-season, it had looked as though Stephen Kelly was going to be the natural long-term successor to Davis, however, after moving from Manchester United’s Under-23 side, McCann no finds himself training with Rangers first-team – Lowland League football is way below the standard he should be playing at.

We paid what is believed to be a decent fee for McCann, considering he has never played senior football, and he is an exciting prospect, the type of signing that Ross Wilson will make more regularly to either save money or to develop and sell further down the line at a profit.

Rangers went toe-to-toe with Inter Milan to sign Ronaldo when he left Barcelona.

Davis can’t play, nor should he be expected to play every week, he will be 37 in January and has to have his minutes managed to get the best out of him and keep him fresh. John Lundstram is a different type of player but can play centrally, however, if we are looking at options that don’t involve changing the system then in McCann and Kelly, we have two players who should be given the chance to impress.

It didn’t do Nathan Patterson any harm after all.
