Former Rangers skipper and assistant manager, David Weir, has backed his old club to become even stronger, if they take full advantage of the potential Champions League riches on offer next season.

Speaking to Football Pass, Weir reflected on his own experiences of getting to a European final when Walter Smith was in charge and how it benefitted the side on the way to three domestic league titles in a row:

“Actually getting into the Champions League which is the top table, brings a level of income which attracts better players.

“Rangers have a real consistency of selection, a real consistency of performance, I’m sure the management and recruitment will be looking for the one or two special players that they can add to the squad that they have got to take them to that next level and keep pushing on domestically and making a real impact at the Champions League level which is the next barrier for Rangers.”

We’ve seen across the city what can happen when you bank on Champions League money but don’t make it to the group stages, they’ve been lucky that their recruitment has allowed them to get away with it for the last couple of seasons with major transfer income but that soon runs out if mistakes are made.

Rangers have to capitalise, adding tens of millions to the budget not only means that a better calibre of player can be attracted to the club but it also means ones like Glen Kamara, James Tavernier and Borna Barisic are less likely to be tempted elsewhere.

For all that we love the Europa League theme music, getting back in amongst the big guns of continental football is tantalisingly close and with the prospect of automatic qualification for the Scottish Premiership winners just around the corner, getting recruitment right just became even more important.
