Rangers chairman Dave King has announced he is to step down from his position in the new year as reported by BBC Sport, King said:

“I would not step down if the club continued to need my services and support. But it doesn’t”.

“Despite the personal trials and tribulations, I want to state that being the chairman of Rangers has been, by far, the greatest privilege of my business life and I will continue to use my shareholding influence to support the club and its board.”

King’s chairmanship has seen a series of courtroom battles against Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct and the Takeover Panel as well as an under performing side on the pitch until the recruitment of Steven Gerrard in the summer of 2018.

In his speech he confirmed that he will stay on until the resolution of his battle with Sports Direct and will continue to support the club and board where required, so, despite stepping down as chairman he will still have an influence in the running of the club.

Prior to King’s involvement and significant investment in the club, Rangers were a laughing stock both on and off the park, he has been responsible for restoring both Ibrox and the Hummel Training Centre to the highest standard on top of £30m being spent on the playing squad to bring it up to scratch.

Rangers are grateful for the work that King has put in to the club during his tenure and took to Twitter to think him for restoring a sense of pride to their team.

Some fans may have been dubious about King when he first took control but the dissident voices have long since hushed with the club in pole position to qualify from the group stages of the Europa League, challenge for the league title and contest their first cup final since 2016.
