Given some of the criticism of Rangers recently and the hyperbolic praise of Ange Postecolgu’s Celtic, you would think that the Scottish media would be reluctant to back Giovanni van Bronckhorst in his attempts to regain the Scottish Premiership title, however, the pundits at Clyde Superscoreboard are almost unanimous in who they are tipping.

Hugh Keevins, Andy Halliday, Gordon Dalziel, Steven Mill and Roger Hannah have all backed Rangers to come out on top this year with just Mark Wilson (hardly a shock) and Andrew McLean reckoning that Celtic will repeat their feat of last season.

Most of the pundits at least given a reason for their decision, however, Keevins – “I’m going for Rangers to win the league” – rather bizarrely thinks that Rangers will win purely because of the pattern of winners over the last three years and that it is our turn.

The biggest difference between the two sides heading into the new campaign is that Celtic have spent a lot of money on players that were on loan deals whereas we have added what looks like on paper to be extra strength to the starting line up and extra depth to the squad.

With just a four point gap last season when we played a record number of games, had injury problems to key players and a managerial change, there were factors that contributed to us not being at our best, however, anything other than finishing in first place in 2022/23 will be seen as a failure. Let’s hope that those who so frequently have outrageous opinions are, on this occasion, right.
