Former Celtic captain Jackie McNamara has waited for the dust to settle before making the most bizarre, and without a doubt the worst, take following Rangers systematic dismantling of his team in the Old Firm derby.

Unsurprisingly, McNamara’s partizan claim came on a Celtic fan podcast, reported by The Daily Record, in which his bitterness at Rangers dominance can be heard with every syllable he utters:

“I think the frustrating thing is they are not a good side, they are not a good team but they were organised, the way he (Gerrard) organises them every game.

“A lot wrong with the shape of the team and the application of the team – going into tackles and riding tackles. It was like a testimonial match; it just played into their hands.

“You’re watching it unfold, and you’re going ‘right, let’s make a change, let’s change something here.’ At half-time, you’re expecting something different.”

So according to Jackie, Europa League last 16 qualifiers Rangers are “not a good team” and despite dominating Celtic in each of the last three Old Firm derbies, he refuses to accept that we are more than worthy winners.

As with Chris Sutton’s comments criticising “finger pointing” whilst doing the very same himself to absolve his mate of any responsibility, McNamara can’t grasp that if Rangers “are not a good side” what does it make Celtic?

Who is taking the defeat worse?

There’s playing to a crowd and then there’s being plain stupid and the former Dundee United boss has shown exactly why his services as a manager aren’t exactly in high demand, if you can’t recognise that being well organised and hard to beat – Celtic failed to register a single shot on target – isn’t a hallmark of a good team, you really should consider taking your coaching badges again.
