It’s not often that Rangers make a statement that the fans are, generally, all happy about, but the one they made about our withdrawal from the Sydney Super Cup probably gets as close as you will ever see.

The whole saga will hopefully serve as a lesson for the Rangers board and executive that thought signing up to play Celtic in a friendly, regardless or there being silverware available, was ever a good idea, the backlash almost as bad as any felt in the era prior to Dave King’s take-over in 2015.

The Rangers Review published an article pretty quickly after the announcement which suggests that they have been given the intelligence from the club directly, issues with payments, use of the term “Old Firm” and how the club’s participation was leaked all being named as contributory factors to us looking to find a way out.

There had been little from the club since the announcement was made but when James Bisgrove insinuated that the leaking of, and timing of, the announcement had been a source of frustration, you sensed that there was already work being done in the background regardless of how much money it would have potentially made us.

You would like to think that the next item on the agenda will be arranging something similar closer to home, a few glamour games at Ibrox would go a long way in helping to restore a battered relationship with the fans, the statement put us back on speaking terms at least.
