At the last count, their captain, manager and chief executive had given up and now that their director of football, Nick Hammond, has also quit, as reported by The Scottish Sun, I make that a clean sweep for Celtic’s hierarchy all chucking the towel in after Steven Gerrard led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title.

Now, this is a double edged sword and it does affect Rangers, this is the guy who oversaw a transfer strategy that involved keeping players who didn’t want to stay at Parkhead and are now in the last year of their contracts – Olivier Ntcham, Ryan Christie, Kristoffer Ajer and Odsonne Edouard – and also brought in Vasilis Barkas for £5million, Albian Ajeti for £5m, Patrick Klimala for £3.5m and not to mention Shane Duffy and Diego Laxalt – they might actually bring someone in who can spot a player.

Celtic now face an even bigger overhaul than the one we went through when Pedro Caixinha was sacked, they are also set to lose an awful lot of money on players they once “valued” in the tens of millions. Not only are these players not successful domestically or on the continent, they are into the last year of their contracts, the pendulum of momentum has definitely swung in our favour.

The biggest mistake in recent years was hiring Caixinha before Mark Allen arrived as director of football, a move he surely wouldn’t have sanctioned, we had tried – and failed – to get Ross Wilson in but had to wait a few more years to acquire his services and as a result panicked to get a manager in, Celtic copying our successful off-pitch set up is one thing, hopefully they’ll copy our mistake too and set themselves even further back in the process.
