Rangers could end up playing their Scottish League Cup semi-final against Aberdeen at Murrayfield instead of Hampden after all, with fresh talks between the SPFL and Police Scotland set to take place.
The Scottish Sun reported on Tuesday that fresh talks are set to take place between the SPFL and Police Scotland after concerns were raised about the viability of Celtic vs Aberdeen taking place just hours later at Hampden after Rangers’ clash with Hearts.
As quoted by the paper, Assistant Chief Constable Bernard Higgins said:
“We’re aware of issues and concerns that have been raised over the last few days about the date and venue of the League Cup semi-finals.
As a responsible organisation and taking into account these public concerns, I think it sensible to discuss the issues raised with the SPFL and other stakeholders and I have asked the SPFL to look again at the transport plan so we can make a full public safety assessment.”
Reports surfaced later in the day again that the SPFL were considering using another stadium in a dramatic u-turn, although Celtic want to determine the fixture that is moved with a draw, rather than it automatically being their semi-final against Hearts.
It all means that Rangers and Aberdeen fans COULD descend on Edinburgh to watch their teams battle it out for a place in the final of the competition.
The whole thing has been a massive cock-up from the start and it looks like the shambles is set to drag on throughout this week.
Why did the SPFL not just earmark Murrayfield or a second stadium in Glasgow prior to the draw for the semi-final? It was a completely preventable drama.
