Rangers manager Steven Gerrard would like to see Lee Wallace stay at the club but has made it clear to the player that Borna Barisic will be his number one pick moving forward.

Wallace’s contract is up at the end of the season and given his lack of first-team action, many have speculated this could be his last year in a Rangers shirt.

He did come off the bench for just the second time in 2018 today though, hinting that there might be some sort of future for him Ibrox.

Gerrard insists it’s all down to the player.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the Gers boss said of Wallace’s situation:

Obviously he’s contracted here until the end of the season. Lee knows quite clear. Our chats that we’ve had will remain private.

He’s in the squad today, he’s been working hard in training, he’s a good professional.

It all depends on how much football he wants to play. But Borna Barisic is our first-choice left back. I’ve made that clear to Lee. I think I made that clear by the amount of money I paid for him.

So it’s down to Lee. If Lee wants to be a squad player and keep pushing for places in the 18 – it’s his decision really rather than mine.

Having Wallace as back-up to Barisic is probably the preferred outcome for many supporters, especially since Jon Flanagan has hardly massively impressed since joining the club in the summer.

Given that the 31-year-old has stuck with Rangers through thick and thin, you’d expect him to sign on for a couple of more years even if it means he is limited to substitute appearances or the odd injury relieving start.

Having spent such a long time out through injury though, he may be keen to play as regularly as possible as he enters the final stages of his career.
