Rangers have been linked with a raft of players since the transfer window re-opened and Ben Davies of Preston North End is one that had previously been linked with those from the east end of Glasgow.

The centre-half has been valued at as high as £10million at one point with the Championship side now said to be wanting half of that to allow him to leave in this window.

Preston have already be ambitious this season with their demands after refusing to let Daniel Johnson leave for £2m in the summer, demanding double that, a strange tactic when money is tight and both players are out of contract in the summer.

Will Rangers pay £5m for a player available on pre-contract?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Speaking to Football Insider, Alan Hutton doesn’t think Rangers will shell out £5m for a player at this moment, particularly when it is an area of the park we are strong in:

“He ticks all the boxes but I think the stumbling block would be the £5million fee.

“I’m not sure whether that’s something Rangers would be willing to pay. Would they be willing to wait until the summer?

“I’ve heard the likes of Celtic are interested as well so that might drive them into doing something sooner.

“It’s all going to come down to the money side of it and who wants him.

“At the moment £5million for Rangers or Celtic is a lot of money, especially in the situation we’re in. I think that’s going to be the stumbling block.”

Of course Hutton is right, not a chance are we paying that sort of money for a player who we can offer a contract to now and sign him without any fee in just a few months time, if he doesn’t accept then we move onto the next name on the list with the squad none the weaker.
