Rangers are reportedly interested in adding Ben Davies of Preston North End to their centre-half ranks with Kevin Phillips claiming in an interview with Football Insider that it would be something of a coup if they get the deal done.

Steven Gerrard is blessed in the heart of his defence, however, the former England striker reckons that Davies would add quality to the Gers manager’s squad:

“Definitely. There are not that many left-sided centre-halves around. It does not half help so he could give Rangers good balance.

“Having been in coaching it is quite difficult when you get two right-footed, right-sided players playing at centre-half.

“Of course you also need quality but Davies has a lot of quality as well. He has shown that this season. He would have no problem going up to Scotland.

“It gives you a slight advantage being able to play at left centre-half and that may appeal to Gerrard. It does not surprise me that they are interested in signing him, he has done very well this season.”

It may be that Gerrard is willing to cut the cord on George Edmundson’s time at Rangers, he has already hinted at an extension of Leon Balogun’s stay so we could have five senior centre-halves when Niko Katic returns to action.

Is there any way back for Edmundson?

No

A loan spell for Katic could be another option and a quartet of Davies, Balogun, Connor Goldson and Filip Helander would certainly be one that provides a solid foundation for the rest of the squad – on a pre-contract it’s a no brainer but not for the reported £5million that Preston want for him just now.
