Having sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst, you would think that Ross Wilson and the Rangers board would already have a replacement pencilled in to take the job rather than having to plod aimlessly on like we did when Steven Gerrard left for Aston Villa.

That the decision came a week after many expected it to happen suggests that we might not have to wait long for an announcement but, with this board, you never know what might happen next.

Vital Rangers has already looked at the frontrunners with the fans and the bookies with The 4th Official claiming that they have gone on better and have the names of the shortlist that has been drawn up:

“Having spoken with a couple of people with knowledge inside Rangers, it seems that the club have zeroed in on 3 names for now.

“Michael Beale, Kjetil Knutsen and Sean Dyche are the three names that the club have sent feelers to at this time.

“The expectation is that there will be more applications but the board wants to wrap this up soon.

“It is difficult to see who the front runner is at this moment as all three bring different aspects to the job.

“Beale is definitely a fan favourite but given what a splendid job Knutsen has done with a low budget, a lot of people on Rangers Twitter definitely want him to be the next manager.

“I will have more when I get any more update on this.”

The concurring thing for me is that the three names are all completely different types of manager in terms of style, experience and personality. This suggests that there isn’t a great deal of succession planning and that we are merely looking at who might be available or who might take the job rather than the best option for what we are trying to achieve long term.
Out of the three, the only one that makes sense for me is Knutsen. He has the experience, a track record of developing youth and an attractive footballing philosophy. Knutsen would also be popular with the fans.
We really need to get the next appointment right but these names are akin to throwing three darts at the board at once and hoping to hit the bullseye – I’not entirely confident that, even with a one-in-three chance of getting things right, that they actually will.
