Steven Gerrard spoke this week about the ongoing recruitment process at Rangers and with the club expected to sell one or two players this summer, there could be the need for replacements.

One such player is Borna Barisic who should be playing for Croatia at the European Championships, potentially in direct opposition to several well known Scotland players, at 28-years old he is at his peak in terms of performance and potential transfer value.

Neither Calvin Bassey nor James Maxwell are ready to step up on a full-time basis yet and one possible target to fill the gap could be lifelong Gers fan and Scotland international Barry Douglas, the Leeds United full-back is conveniently out of contract in the summer, a move that Gabriel Agbonlaor feels would be perfect for both parties when asked if he thought it had any legs, as reported by Football Insider.

“100 per cent, yes.

“I really liked him when he was at Leeds. He did very well when they got promoted but then he lost his place.

“But I’m sure that’s one that Steven Gerrard will snap their fingers off for.

“He’s a talented player and as a Rangers fan it couldn’t mean more to him. I can see that.”

There is no doubting Douglas’s quality and despite being a couple of years older, he does have a very similar style of play to Barisic in that he likes to play higher up the park and contribute to the attack, he also takes a similarly effective set-piece, normally I wouldn’t be too happy about taking what looks like a backwards step but the Leeds man fits our system without blocking the pathway of Bassey or Maxwell.

I’d be gutted to see Barisic go but, if we could persuade Douglas to head north, it would certainly soften the blow.
