Juninho Bacuna is on the verge of a move to Birmingham City, according to a Scottish press report this afternoon.

The Daily Record have reported that the Dutch-born Curacao international is close to a return to the English Championship, in what wouldn’t be a great loss for the Scottish champions as well as freeing up wages and making room in what is a bloated squad.

The news on this potential transfer featured a claim that the Blues will not be paying as much to the player, whilst there was no mention of a potential transfer fee:

“Birmingham are unable, as it stands, to cover what Bacuna is on at Rangers but an agreement looks likely to be struck. The Dutchman moved to Rangers from Huddersfield in August but has struggled for first-team football.”

“Steven Gerrard signed him but he hasn’t had a lot of game time under his successor, Giovanni van Bronckhorst. His fellow Dutchman is now set to allow him to leave.”

“Bacuna netted his only Rangers goal in a win over Ross County in November and has made 12 appearances since being signed by Gerrard.”

No surprise

Early this week, VitalRangers questioned whether Bacuna would have even a short term future at Ibrox.

His style, personality on the pitch and general demeanour just don’t appear to be suited to the tough demands at this club as well as the unique nature of Scottish football. From the outset, this move was something of a low risk from Gerrard and Ross Wilson but it isn’t one that has paid off.

Twelve appearances, mostly used as a sub and no breakthrough in terms of a run of games or sustained impact really speaks for itself. In this instance, it is probably for the best if player and club go their separate ways.
