Rangers B secured an excellent 3-0 win over Septemvri Sofia on Tuesday night to secure their passage to the knock-out rounds of the UEFA Youth League.

The goals came from Alex Lowry, Tony Weston and Cole McKinnon to secure a 7-2 aggregate score over the Bulgarian side.

This progress is significant and now opens the door for the young Gers to test themselves against the very best in Europe, with the Youth League now following a similar path to the senior Europa League.

Rangers have so far played in the ‘Domestic Champions Path’ which is separate to the ‘Champions League group stage path’ with the latter mirroring the senior competition. Those teams who topped the groups now progress to the Last 16 with the runners-up joining Rangers and other champions path winners at the play-off stage (Last 32).

The draw for the Play Off round is next Tuesday when the Gers could be paired with one of the following sides:
Atlético, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Club Brugge, Dynamo Kyiv, Inter, Sevilla, Villarreal
The game will be a one-off tie, with Rangers having home advantage on 9/10th February.

This progress is to be enjoyed and celebrated by all at the club, it exposes the youg Rangers players to a greater level and challenge which will further enhance their development as well as promoting the reputation and understanding of Rangers on the wider football stage.

Credit must go to the coaches and leadership of the youth system at Auchenhowie who are clearly making strides in raising the levels across under age levels, with the aim of the B team to boost development and get those players as close as possible to the first team.

B team coach Brian Gilmour was delighted with his team’s performance, stating:

“The players are really focussed, we don’t want just one more game and we would like to go as far as we can in the competition and ultimately test ourselves against the best out there in Europe in their age group.”
