It was going to happen sooner or later seeing as it’s happened to every other player but Calvin Bassey has been linked with a reunion with former manager Steven Gerrard.

The 22-year old has really had his breakout season after making his debut in senior football last year, showing that he is equally comfortable in a range of positions. His ability to switch seamlessly between centre-half and left-back has been a useful tactic under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

A report in The Telegraph  has claimed that the Nigerian international was being lined up as cover for Lucas Digne. Himself only signed from Everton in January.

There’s a view issues with this story.

For a start, Bassey would probably demand a club record fee – a “sizeable fee” according to the story – due to his age allied to his performances in the Europa League and establishment in the Nigeria squad, it’s easy to see just how much he could still develop, his ceiling is as high as he wants it to be. I’m not sure Villa would want to pay such a big fee for a back-up when there will be other areas that Gerrard will want to strengthen too.

Then there’s the fact that Bassey, under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, has become an important player for Rangers and is improving all the time, why would he want to risk that, and playing for his country, to sit on the bench or in the stands?

With Connor Goldson likely to leave in the summer, Bassey could be even more important next season, his availability and flexibility will be crucial to keeping a modicum of stability in the centre of defence, Gerrard will just have to look elsewhere or dig very deep into his pockets.
