When Steven Gerrard inherited the Rangers squad, it was evident that he had considerable work to enhance the quality of the Gers. Since assuming managerial duties, the Liverpool icon has wasted no time, as he has already completed six signings and the latest reports indicate that Rangers are hopeful of signing another four players.

Rangers have completed seven summer signings, six of which were acquired with Gerrard as manager, and the Scotsman reports that the newly-appointed Rangers boss is hopeful of completing another four deals before the conclusion of the summer transfer window. The following quotes are from the Sun.

“I am also aware that if we get the areas sorted out that we feel need sorted it will make the squad too big.”

“We will have to edge a few out and be honest with people and say to them that maybe they are not going to get the game time they want.”

“But they are making it very tough because training has been very intense, it has been quality, and everyone is pushing to stay here, which is a good thing.”

To his credit, three of Rangers’ seven summer signings have been defensive recruits, in an attempt to solidify and stabilise the Gers’ defensive unit. Without question, Rangers’ defence was abysmal in the Scottish Premiership last season, having conceded a staggering total of 50 goals in 38 games. By contrast, Celtic only shipped 25 goals, which further reinforces the significance of Rangers’ defensive signings.

Furthermore, the arrivals of Arfield and Ejaria will provide the Gers with dynamism and Premier League pedigree. To date, Rangers have succeeded to sign a balanced group of players, striking an ideal combination of youth and experience. Evidently, Gerrard has identified Rangers’ weaknesses and has intervened to eradicate those issues. Rangers could be poised for an exhilarating season if the Gers continue with their astute transfer business.
