Allan McGregor is set to break Barry Ferguson’s European appearances record by lining up between the sticks for the 83rd time in the tie with Standard Liege tonight, as reported by The Daily Record.

Steven Gerrard, speaking as part of the pre-match build up, revealed that the former Scotland stopper will get the nod over Jon McLauglin as he has done in most of the “bigger” fixtures this season, looking to keep his tenth clean sheet of the season and help us into the knockout stages of the Europa League for the second year in succession.

Speaking about the 38-year old, the gaffer couldn’t have been happier about the standards set by McGregor since he arrived:

“His consistency levels from day one have been at a really high level and Allan deserves to break this record.

“I’m really pleased for him, we are all proud of him here. He has never let us down and he is someone we are extremely happy with.

“To take the record off someone like Barry Ferguson who has an incredible legacy at the club, I think it should be a proud day for both.

“He is certainly up there alongside the best I have played with in terms of how he goes about his business on a daily basis.

“His standards are top and it certainly helps my job when there are people in the dressing room that help relay the message and basically set the standards themselves.”

High praise indeed, that McGregor is set to be offered a new deal which could potentially see him player for Rangers into his 40’s speaks volumes for his professionalism and also the level of consistency that he continues to show.

Who scored Rangers first competitive goal of the season?

The recruitment team performed a masterstroke by getting McLaughlin in as a back-up, that he has nine clean sheets of his own show that he can be trusted to deputise as and when required, he has also allowed McGregor to be rested which could benefit us in the long run – given the number of games we play, 100 appearances in Europe cannot be ruled out for one of the greatest ever to don the gloves for the Light Blues.
