Alfredo Morelos wasn’t a happy man on Sunday after being hooked without a goal to his name against Aberdeen, as always, he is never far from the headlines.

Steven Gerrard defended the Colombian international responding “Does he ever?” when it was put to him about his striker’s response to being substituted, it’s never a tempestuous response, more one born out of not adding to his personal tally when the opportunity was there to do so.

There does, however, appear to be a Jekyll and Hyde nature to the 24-year old’s season with just three goals and two assists in 11 domestic appearances but four goals and two assists in just six games on the continent – a tactical tweak has seen him spend less and less time between the width of the posts but this doesn’t excuse the drop in numbers.

How many senior players did Rangers sign this summer?

With the players that the gaffer has at his disposal now he no longer has to pick Morelos, Cedric Itten has rarely been seen centrally, Kemar Roofe’s strongest position is through the middle and we have Ianis Hagi that can play as the right-sided attacker – it can also be easily forgotten that we still have Jermain Defoe who is more than capable of scoring goals in the Scottish Premiership.

On a game-by-game basis we have seen Gerrard pick the best team for each job and although he might not be happy about it, perhaps it is the time for El Bufalo to be used more sparingly in domestic football, after all, we will soon have to cope without him all the time when he eventually heads for pastures new.
