Now that the dust has settled on a weird transfer window, Ross Wilson can concentrate on getting the players that stayed at Rangers tied up on new long-term deals to avoid a similar scenario to the fire sale we saw across the city this summer.

Moving to a player trading model means that our top talents will be sold if the price is right but to ensure that value is maximised, they must be on decent contracts that reflect what the club values them at in an ever changing market.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Leeds United striker, Noel Whelan, believes that Alfredo Morelos will be one of the first players who will be asked to sign on the dotted line, given that he is one of a few key players who are into the last two years of their respective contracts:

“He’s got two years left on his current deal. Come January, Rangers will think about putting a package together.

“Right now, at the start of the season with two years left on the deal, I think you can expect talks in January.

“I’m sure he will be willing to extend because Rangers will be up there by that point.”

For all that we missed out on the Champions League, ensuring group stage football in the Europa League should be enough to encourage the likes of Morelos that we are still progressing, there is also the fact that, even though he has aspirations of playing in a better league, if we are in a strong position domestically in January it would be hard to turn down a free hit at the continent’s elite competition the following year – the ultimate prize for winning the Scottish Premiership.

Who scored the winner in Sunday's first Old Firm of 2021/22?

We have saved a bit of money this summer by not splashing out on big transfer fees, another run in Europe would be a great help as well as the ever expanding catalogue of commercial projects and partners that James Bisgrove has brought on board, so adding a few pounds to the wage bill isn’t out of the question – it’s just a matter of who stays, and who goes, and which category El Bufalo will fall in to.
