If Alfredo Morelos has no intention of putting pen to paper on a new Rangers deal, the worst thing he could do is think that his current form is going to be good enough to get him a team anywhere near the level to get back into the Colombia squad or to compete in Europe.

The way he has been playing, he’d be lucky to get a team at all.

The flip side of this is that we all know what Morelos is capable of when he is at his best and, speaking to Football Insider, Alan Hutton reckons that a new manager could be exactly what he needs to get back to his previous levels:

“We know everything that is going on with Alfredo Morelos. He has really struggled this season. Whether it be because [Antonio] Colak has come in and done so well.

“Maybe Alfredo thought he was going to come back and go straight in and be the main man and that has not quite happened. His performances have not been great.

“He had been given opportunities just before Gio left and they were not good enough.

“Maybe it is a case of looking at the future without Alfredo Morelos.

“Everybody starts with a clean slate when the new manager comes in. If he wants to stay at the club he has to prove himself. Even if he wants to get a move, he needs to be playing at a certain level and I do not think he has hit that so far.

“I think it will be good for the club either way.“

Hutton is right, Morelos doesn’t have any other option other than to work hard, get fit and force Michael Beale to play him. If he does, then everybody wins.

Rangers will have a motivated striker and the player himself is more likely to attract attention if he wants to move on, making his options a lot more attractive than if he was sitting on the bench kicking his heels watching Antonio Colak and Kemar Roofe play every week.

Morelos was the main man under Giovanni van Bronckhorst until he picked up a season-ending injury last year which made his attitude and performances all the more bizarre this campaign, it wasn’t like the previous manager hadn’t put his faith in him and showed that he trusts him – if anything, some of the football he played was as good as he has ever produced in a Light Blue shirt.
