Brian Laudrup was a genius on the park and, as we’ve seen from his career since he retired, he isn’t daft off it either.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, and reported by Glasgow Live, the Great Dane has agreed with Vital Rangers assessment that Alfredo Morelos’s performances in the Europa League will dictate how much he goes for, not what he does in the Scottish Premiership.

“Everyone has been looking for adjectives to describe how Morelos performed in the last round of the Europa League. Steven Gerrard called him ‘unplayable’ and ‘sublime’. I’ll go for ‘absolutely phenomenal’. Across both legs of the tie, he produced two of the best performances of his entire career.

“Gerrard also said he knew why Morelos loves playing in Europe. I think we can all guess that the Colombian takes something extra from being able to showcase his talent to the biggest audience possible.

“Regardless of what his motivation might be, Morelos has saved his best performances for the latter part of the season. He looks ready to drive Rangers over the finishing line in the Premiership and spearhead their push to go further in the Europa League.

“I don’t know what might then happen with him in terms of a possible transfer this summer. That will be up to Rangers. And the market.

“But if Morelos is being driven on by a desire to make sure he goes out on a high and is remembered as an excellent striker, then you know what? That’s more than fine by me. He deserves that kind of legacy.

“Morelos could be playing fantastically well in Scotland and people at those clubs would still question whether he could take the next step. By shining in the Europa League, the 24-year-old has shown he has what it takes. And that argument becomes even more convincing if he can do it again in the last 16 or the quarter-finals.”

What league Morelos is playing in is almost irrelevant, compare his figures in the Europa League to any other striker and he comes out on top, only Bruno Fernandes can match him for goals – excluding qualifiers – and he takes penalties for Manchester United, El Bufalo would be miles out in front if he took spot kicks.

For all that we are going to be devastated when he leaves, it’s almost going to be exciting to see where he goes next, and for how much, he might have his “moments” but one thing is for sure – he loves the big occasion and as Laudrup says, if he can fire us into the quarter-finals and beyond, his stock amongst Gers fans is only going in one direction.
