As quickly as the rumour started, it was put to bed.

When Football Insider and journalist Peter O’Rourke claimed that Alex Lowry had rejected the offer of a new Rangers contract, alarm bells were quickly heard throughout the support, although, given that his deal runs until next summer, there shouldn’t have been the rush to brand him a money grabber.

There was though, no reason for the panic with Heart and Hand’s David Edgar quickly brandishing the report as “rubbish” having been told directly from the horses mouth, or a club representative at least.

Lowry has burst onto the scene under Giovanni van Bronckhorst with some sparkling cameos and impressive league debut against Livingston, he is clearly a player who the manager feels has a future at the club.

With Ianis Hagi injured and unlikely to be back to his best until well into next season, the 18-year old Scotland youth international has a great opportunity to make his transition to the wrist-team a permanent one by continuing to make the most of his opportunities.

He has shown that he can be trusted against Premiership opposition and you’d struggle find a Rangers fan who would have any problem with him in the starting XI for all but the biggest fixtures.

Ross Wilson may have more pressing contract issues in terms of some of the key players that are into the last 18-months of their deals but Lowry, like Leon King, is every bit as important to the club in terms of protecting what could one day be as valuable an asset as Nathan Paterson proved to be.
