One thing Rangers have been badly missing in the last couple of months since Tom Lawrence got injured was creativity in midfield, someone who can pick a pass and with a natural want to drive forwards and get defenders on the back foot.

What also hasn’t helped is Ianis Hagi’s long-term absence and an opportunity wasted for Alex Lowry to stake his claim to be a regular in the first team.

Lowry has been unlucky in that he picked up a minor injury in pre-season training before returning only to be injured again just as he was looking like he was back to his best, that the player responsible saw no retrospective action says it all about the SFA’s disciplinary procedures.

The Scotland Under-21 cap has been back playing games for a few weeks now though and, if his involvement for the international side is anything to go by, he could be set to, finally, make his impact when domestic football kicks off again after the World Cup.

This is Lowry at his best. We don’t have any other midfielders capable of picking out this sort of pass and playing it with this precision. There is no reason why, especially in the Scottish Premiership, he shouldn’t be getting more minutes playing alongside John Lundstram.

We’ve also seen what Lowry is capable of in terms of his finishing from open play and in dead-ball situations, something that Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara and Steven Davis are not exactly known for.

If Giovanni van Bronckhorst wants to keep his job, picking the same players and expecting different results is a surefire way to ensure he doesn’t – it’s time to let Lowry loose.
