According to the Daily Record, Steven Gerrard is eager to get a new contract sorted for highly-rated youngster Josh McPake.

The Gers, and perhaps I’m biased, have one of the best young academies in Europe with some of the bright prospects coming through.

Indeed, the success it has enjoyed of late will hopefully only set us up on a senior level for trophies but we must, therefore, keep these young boys at the club.

According to the report, then, we’re aiming to sign McPake onto a 3-year deal with his current deal up in the summer of next year.

In doing that, though, we’d also be making a statement as we’d be warding off the interest of the likes of Liverpool and AS Roma – two very big clubs indeed.

Clearly, there is quite the chase on for the youngster and Rangers will hopefully beat off their interest and get him on a new deal – if nothing else but to increase his potential transfer exit fee.
