Pittodrie is renowned to be a difficult place for Rangers to go to, but how much of that is a myth or does it actually add up?

Below, you will find the full record over the last four seasons, stretching back to the arrival of Steven Gerrard in Glasgow when Michael Beale was at his side as a trusted first team coach. The current manager knows all about this fixture and the environment that awaits. Aberdeen will hold no surprises in store but it remains to be seen how Jom Goodwin’s team will play tonight.

Will they go for the passive, ultra defensive approach that was deployed against Celtic at the weekend or will the predictably find another level for a much stronger, braver performance? All will be revealed come 8pm in what is a very intriguing fixture in these early days of the new Ibrox regime.

A victory would be most welcome to add to the following results:

2018/19

Premiership

5th August 2018 – Aberdeen 1 Rangers 1

6th February 2019 – Aberdeen 2 Rangers 4

League Cup

28th October 2018 – Aberdeen 1 Rangers 0

Scottish Cup

3rd March 2019 – Aberdeen 1 Rangers 1

2019/20

Premiership

4th December 2019 – Aberdeen 2 Rangers 2

2020/21

Premiership

1st August 2020 – Aberdeen 0 Rangers 1

10th January 2021 – Aberdeen 1 Rangers 2

2021/22

Premiership

18th January 2021 – Aberdeen 1 Rangers 1

Three wins in eight games over the last four seasons isn’t a good enough return for Rangers against Aberdeen despite much of the nonsense and noise that surrounds these games. It has been refreshing for Michael Beale to look to focus on what his team does in aiming for the three points rather than more of a focus on what the hosts will do. At Ibrox, the recent history isn’t that much better with 5 wins in 11 over the same period.

Back in 2018/19 in Gerrard’s forst season there was the damaging double cup exit to the Dons which included a Scottish Cup replay exit in 2019 as well as the League Cup semi-final loss.

Inspiration can be taken from the first day of the title winning season when Rangers set the tone in terms of winning as well as the clean sheets that backed up the momentum. A solitary Ryan Kent strike was enough to take all three points and set down a marker. The same sentiment applies this evening.
