Speaking to talkSPORT – via the Scottish Sun – Danny Murphy has suggested that Rangers do not need to worry about Steven Gerrard leaving for Newcastle United this summer.

The Magpies managed to combust in a way only they can earlier this summer as Rafa Benitez left the side and they are now looking for a new manager.

After a good year at Ibrox, it perhaps makes sense that Gerrard might be one name in the frame for the vacancy but Murphy has suggested that it is unlikely.

He said:

“I doubt it. I haven’t spoken to him about this so I couldn’t say.

“But I doubt it because he went up there with a real ambition to try and overturn the Celtic stronghold and try and compete for that title.”

Certainly, this is what we will be pinning our hopes on.

Some in England perhaps do not understand what an achievement it would be for Gerrard to get us back on top and finish our return to our rightful place on top of the Scottish tree.

Whatever manager achieves it will go down in folklore and Gerrard must want to be the man who does that.
