On loan Rangers midfielder is determined to fight for his future at Ibrox when he returns from Shrewsbury Town, already declaring his hopes to stay at the club for as long as possible.

The promising prospect joined from Hamilton in January and impressed in bursts in the second half of last season, but was deemed surplus to requirements by incoming manager Steven Gerrard.

He’s made 10 appearances for the League One outfit, scoring three goals and assisting twice.

In a move that was seen more of an aid to his development than an end to his Ibrox career, Docherty is hoping that the first-team action in England can be a springboard towards greater success in Glasgow.

As quoted by The Daily Record, the 22-year-old said:

I’ve taken a gamble coming down here to Shrewsbury. The hope is that while I’m missing out on some big nights this season, I can develop to the point where I’ll be able to look forward to many of them in the years to come.

I’ve still got four years on my contract and I fully intend to see it out – if not extend it.

The gaffer told me any time I’m up visiting, I should pop in. He said he wants me still to be around the place.

My kit and my locker’s still there and the last time I was up on a day off, I popped in to use the gym and had a quick chat with him and the staff.

I’d scored the weekend before and the gaffer mentioned it. It’s nice to know he’s keeping an eye on me.

It’s nice to hear that the player sees the whole situation as a learning process and it appears he’s as motivated as ever to make an impact in the Gers first team squad.

That Steven Gerrard is also looking out for him is a greatly positive sign.

That kind of atmosphere can only be a benefit to players and in turn Rangers. If Docherty doesn’t make it at Rangers, we’ll at least know it has little to do with off the field problems.

Here’s hoping that he can get stuck in when he returns permanently.
