St Johnstone boss Callum Davison has expressed his admiration for his own loan attacker Gelnn Middleton and has designs on extending his stay in Perth.

Yesterday, VitalRangers featured a report in which the former Norwich player revealed he was open to extending his deal, if his future lies awy from Ibrox.

The Scotland U21 international has made a positive impact at McDiarmid Park although he has mostly featured from the bench.

It is clear from the words of the manager that his work and application has not gone unnoticed – especially his crucial goal – his sole strike so far in seven appearance – recently to secure a top half finish for St Johnstone.

The Courier reported on the thoughts on the Saints boss toward Middleton:

“Glenn has had to be patient but he’s come off the bench against Ross County and scored the goal that got us into the top six.”

“That’s some achievement.”

“He’s worked really hard from the day he arrived here and the more I can get him involved, the better he’ll be for us.”

“But if he does unbelievably well for me in the next five or six games I probably won’t get the chance to keep him!”

Davidson added further, “He’s great about the place, he wants to learn and has a really positive attitude about everything he does.”

“We’ll be looking to get him more game-time and then have a conversation with Rangers about next season. Hopefully that’s something we can think about.”

“I think he’s at the stage in his career where he now needs sustained matches.”

At 22, Middleton is now at a pivotal juncture – with two years left on his Rangers deal, can he climb to get back into Steven Gerrard’s plans?

It is an uphill task but progression and continuity is what the player needs, most importantly, first team action.

There is a very good case for another 12 month loan deal to be sanctioned with St Johnstone, so that Rangers protect their talented asset.
