Former Rangers defender Fabio Cardoso, brought to Ibrox by Pedro Caixinha in 2017, is set to join Benfica this summer, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

Cardoso made just 18 appearances for the club in a disastrous season that resulted in Caixinha’s sacking, with Graeme Murty taking charge for the reason of the 2017/18 campaign.

The 24-year-old made just a single appearance between October and May, going down as one of the big transfer flops of an expensive summer transfer window.

Despite signing a three-year deal at Ibrox his contract was ‘mutually terminated’ last year, with the player then returning to his homeland to sign for top-flight club Santa Clara.

He’s had an impressive season there, helping them to eighth place in the table and scoring six goals in 25 appearances.

Now reports in Portugal say that Benfica will make a move for him in the upcoming transfer window, the club where he started his career.

Should we have remained more patient with him? Have we made a mistake by not only letting him go, but letting him go for nothing?
