Steven Gerrard has got a lot of things right at Rangers this season. The manager has come in and transformed the team, and sure, whilst we haven’t done as well in recent weeks as we had hoped, it’s fair to say that for the most part, the season has been very kind to us.

However, no manager has ever got everything right, and recent comments from former Ger Umar Sadiq serve to indicate that Gerrard’s decision to bring him in was flawed. Speaking to the Sunday Post, he’s commented on everything from supposed missed salary payments to the arrival of Kyle Lafferty effectively putting an end to his Rangers hopes.

If there’s one thing that his comments make clear, though, it’s that bringing him in was a mistake from the start.

It seems as though Sadiq downed tools at the first opportunity, and that speaks more of him than it does about Rangers. He did have a few opportunities to impress at the club, but his lack of form is down to him, rather than the manager or his teammates.

He can pin his issues on the club or, more presently, Steven Gerrard – but neither party was responsible for the forward forgetting how to play whenever he stepped on the bladed grass.

Sure, having other options didn’t help him, but the boss clearly wasn’t impressed off the field, and Sadiq’s lack of regret over the whole situation highlights how problematic his presence at the club was.

Simply put, Sadiq doesn’t have the elite mentality needed to succeed at Rangers, and if you put his lack of talent to the side for a second, that’s really what let him down. And these comments prove it. Gerrard made a big mistake bringing him in, and he can’t afford to do anything similar this summer.
