Patterson shines again, Tavernier looking over his shoulder

It’s getting a bit of a habit for Nathan Patterson.

Usually youth players get to gradually break themselves into first-team football, the odd league or Scottish Cup tie and coming off the bench in comfortably wins but this would be way too easy for our Scotland international right-back.

Yet again, in a pressurised fixture, he has come in to replace James Tavernier and not only has he held his own and not let anyone down, but he was outstanding, earning the man of the match award on the BBC Sport website in the process.

He was solid defensively, one first-half moment of eagerness aside, and – in the hardest role in the team given the conditions – contributed as much to the attack as any of his team-mates, offering a threat almost every time he got the ball.

Varying his final ball, the biggest difference between him and the skipper is that Patterson tends to want to drive to the byline, something that the Rangers forwards have to adapt their runs for because he gets there most of the time either through playing 1-2s or by using his pace to make overlapping runs.

Who scored Rangers first ever goal under Steven Gerrard in EL qualification?

It’s still incredible to think how inexperienced he is and yet he continues to display an assurance and maturity that many of his senior colleagues could well do with developing both in and out of possession, for example, he shouldn’t have had to bail out Connor Goldson as frequently as he did against a side from Armenia with ten men.

Gary McAllister was coy about who will be available for selection on Sunday, there will be positions that we will work about, but right-back, in Patterson’s hands, isn’t one of them.
