Old Firm habits die hard for Patterson

Nathan Patterson never lost to Celtic in his time at Rangers, admittedly he wasn’t in the first team for long but it’s still a record that he had no intentions of losing when he lined up against them again for Everton in the Sydney Cup.

Having come up through the ranks at Auchenhowie, he will have played in numerous Old Firm derbies and it looks as though, despite wearing the blue of another team, that old feelings die hard.

Not only did Patterson receive the first yellow card of the game for an “agricultural” challenge on Jota but he played at an intensity that did little to suggest that there was anything friendly about the encounter for him.

Frank Lampard, the current Everton manager, was quick to praise the 21-year old Scotland international’s attitude after the game and how he didn’t have to be asked to volunteer to get one over on Celtic by scoring in the penalty shoot out – it’s safe to say that he enjoyed that one.

Patterson is the dream in that we would love to have a team full of players like him, however, that’s just never going to be possible.

If they graduate from Auchenhowie and make anywhere near the same impact as the young right back, then they are every bit as likely to follow him down the M74 into England and to the riches of the Premier League.

Leon King and Alex Lowry are the next two off the conveyor belt with Robbie Ure and Charlie McCann also impressing when they have been given a chance, what goes in their favour though is that they don’t have the skipper and best player blocking their path to the first team.

It’s always good to see one of our own doing well – especially against them – and you just know that they will have hated seeing Patterson strutting his stuff as if he didn’t have a care in the world – good lad, Nathan, good lad.
