Opinion: Gerrard must see some of the seven-figure cash boost he secured for Rangers this season

|

Rangers’ cash boost from the UEFA Europa League campaign must be re-invested back into the team, with the club set to receive around £4.2m in prize money alone for our run in the competition.

As shown by the UEFA revenue distribution figures, Steven Gerrard and his team secured £680,000 for progression through the qualifying stages, £2.5m for taking part in the group stages and around £1m for our six points.

When you consider we have yet to receive our share of TV money for the competition and factor in three sold out matches at Ibrox, it’s clear that Gerrard’s achievement has been a massive financial boost for the club.

A lot has been made of the manager’s domestic failures in his debut season, but that kind of contribution is huge and can’t be underrated.

The onus will now be on Dave King and his Rangers board to free up some of those funds to allow the Ibrox boss to invest in his first-team squad, with Gerrard making it clear he is looking for first-team quality in the upcoming transfer window and not just squad filler.

The former Liverpool man delivered on one of his key aims at the start of the season and if we are to have a chance of making the groups again and push for domestic honours, then the money needs to be available to build on the job that he has already done.

This is the first summer we’ll have a bit of stability at the club for a number of years and with Celtic going for a ninth league title in a row, we can’t afford not to put maximum resources into this coaching staff and group of players.

Gerrard has direct evidence he has improved the revenue of the club, it’s now time for him to see a bit of that back.
