Make no mistake, Rangers have more than a few problems defensively. Steven Gerrard hasn’t been able to settle on a defensive duo all season long, and nobody has been faultless throughout the Gers’ campaign.

So, if Rangers are to win back the Scottish title this term, it’s going to be very tough to achieve their goals without more defensive solidity.

Maybe, then, with the January transfer window on the horizon, a new defensive recruit could make that a more achievable goal, and Gerrard could find that in Everton man Mason Holgate.

The Englishman, according to the Mirror, will be allowed to leave Everton on loan in January – and he’d be a real hit in the Scottish top flight.

Despite being justs 22-years-old, Holgate has 38 Premier League appearances to his name, which is a testament to his quality. He’s achieved that number of displays through his calm and reassuring performances in the English top flight. A brilliant tackler with excellent anticipation, agility and speed, Holgate is the modern central defender – and he’s got bags of quality.

He’s lost his place in the Everton first team, but that’s not any slight on his ability. Everton have invested heavily defensively, and that’s naturally made life tough for Holgate. However, the very fact that they don’t want him to leave permanently speaks volumes about his potential.

He could come to Ibrox in January and really help improve things until the end of the season, and that could be enough to help Rangers seal a famous title win.
