In the build-up to the Old Firm Scottish Cup clash tomorrow, there has been plenty of things said as the heat gets turned up.

The so called war of words, with shots fired from both sides, provides a welcome spark of rivalry and competitive spirit to the encounter for all involved.

Quite simply, it matters more this time.

Last time out, a 1-1 draw was played out at Parkhead in a game that lacked tempo and passion – it wasn’t the usual helter skelter Old Firm that we know and love.

Much of that was down to the fact that the game was effectively ‘meaningless’ with Rangers having already wrapped up the Premiership title.

Once again, we can all embrace the true spirit of the biggest game in Scotland and hopefully for one of the last times, in our homes.

It also came directly after the Gers Europa League battle with Slavia Prague at Ibrox – the emotional toll of that match is still emanating, whilst the physical demands of the night were high too.

Incentive

This time is very different – the league has to be parked.

There is a very important game to be won given the prize on the line.

Another Old Firm victory for Rangers brings Scottish Cup success closer for Steven Gerrard’s team – to achieve that would bring to an end a 12 year wait for end of season Hampden joy.

Gerrard is all too aware that his ‘cup’ has been half empty in his time at Ibrox so far, with five previous knockout tournament eliminations.

That needs to change.

For players, coaches and fans tomorrow is huge and highly anticipated, the incentive and motivation is clear.

As always, it is all about what Rangers do for our own aims, but there is the added bonus of ending Celtic’s season tomorrow and to nullify any hopes of a swansong for Scott Brown.

The Celtic captain has been largely quiet in the recent derby games despite a marginally better showing last time out.

If Rangers turn up and apply themselves effectively, there will be little to worry about – that has been proven over the course of this season.

The boys in blue are due to provide an Old Firm performance for the occasion, but it provides added comfort that the last two games have saw Gerrard’s team a bit off-colour but still not getting beat, with a win and a draw secured.

Tomorrow is the one, it’s time for a lift, it’s time to deliver a Scottish Cup and to lay down a marker against Celtic in the process.

The time is now.
