Arthur Numan has saluted the end of season efforts of Giovanni van Bronckhorst and the squad whilst considering the cost of the relative success.

The Dutchman acknowledged the contributions and performances of key players such as James Tavernier, Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent, Connor Goldson, Calvin Bassey, Allan McGregor and Steven Davis but has asked if they will all remain at Ibrox?

For different reasons the answer should be no. Those factors are age, player trading and turnover.

Numan was quoted in his column for Five Stars, assessing the state of play with the squad following the Europa League and Scottish Cup Finals when he said:

“Signing targets will have already been identified and work will be underway to recruit them. There are also question marks hanging over the future of players such as Allan McGregor and Steve Davis.”

“Both are out of contract and I hope both stay for one more year. They are highly talented and highly experienced. They are assets to the squad.”

“Connor Goldson looks to be away on freedom of contract. What a servant he has been. He will be missed. A couple of players may also be the subject of interest from clubs elsewhere and that is to be expected.”

Luxury

At 37 and 40, Davis and McGregor no longer have time on their side. As much as they can still contribute, is it in the best interests for them both to remain in terms of the evolution of the squad and what about the pathway for younger players like Alex Lowry and Charlie McCann. It is a very difficult call. For McGregor, the Hampden farewell on the pitch and the sentiment from the fans appeared to be the perfect goodbye. Surely it is better to bow out on good terms rather than out of necessity?

Numan added on other potential player activity:

“When you reach a European Final and three of your players – Tavernier, Ryan Kent and Calvin Bassey – get in the Europa League Team of the Season, clubs from the wealthier leagues take notice.”

“Calvin appears to be the name on everyone’s lips at the moment and he has earned it. He has two years left to run on his contract and I’m sure Giovanni will want to keep him. But that can’t stop clubs from England or abroad bidding for him.”

“The starting price has been suggested at around the £20million mark and I can’t disagree with that valuation.”

It is unrealistic and unhealthy to expect the nucleus of a team to stay together into a fifth year. There will be movement and player trading is essential. Many of our current regulars were in place during Steven Gerrard’s first season in 18/19. That will change as GvB puts his own stamp and responsibility further onto this Rangers squad.
