Not A Bad Debut!

Then again, who do you say this about? Rangers had no fewer than seven summer signings involved in our six-two win against Hibernian with a debutant manager too!

But for the purposes of this one I’m refereeing to Martyn Waghorn, who as I seem to recall him saying pre-match he wanted to score goals against Hibernian again having done this for Wigan in pre-season?

Playing your part in a win will always be your debut aim, but doing this and grabbing a brace as Waghorn did against Hibernian on Saturday doesn’t get much better does it? He’s told rangers.co.uk he was ‘very, very pleased’ to get his goals and hopes to build on this.

‘I’m very, very pleased to get a couple of goals, and overall it was a good performance, especially in the second half.

‘In the first half, we were a bit sloppy, but personally I’m very pleased with the two goals and to start my competitive debut with a performance like that is hopefully something to build on.’

Waghorn, as he had eluded to in his initial thoughts, praised the overall team performance but did admit the Gers couldn’t get into the game in the opening half an hour or so against a dominant Hibernian side, who he offered credit too also.

Having come from behind the striker admitted he thought we were lucky to go in two-one up at half time thanks to James Tavernier’s equaliser and of course his poachers finish.

‘We were very slow in the first 30 minutes, and they dominated the game and we couldn’t get a foothold in the game.

‘Credit to them – they passed the ball very well with a very high intensity. I’m pleased for Tav to get is first goal, and it was great for me to score too, but on reflection, we were very fortunate to go in ahead at half-time.’

Much as Mark Warburton had said Waghorn also felt we played some good football in the end when we got going.

The 25-year-old went onto add he feels that in coming from behind and winning the way we did it showed ‘a lot about our character and the belief we have in ourselves’ with the foundations in place for us to kick on from this.
