Rino Gattuso is popular with some sections of the Rangers support in the race to find the next manager for the Scottish champions.

Gennaro, as he is more commonly known, outside of Glasgow and the Rangers bubble would definitely be box office, with fireworks guaranteed along the way but as well as questions over his temperament, there are other doubts about the passionate Italian and his suitability to replace Steven Gerrard.

He has been out of work since he left Napoli at the end of last season, having just failed to qualify for the Champions League.

In a strange situation, he was actually named as Fiorentina’s boss in May this year but little over two weeks later, that agreement had been annulled due to serious disagreements with the hierarchy of the Florence club.

He has been been thrust into the spotlight as a contender for Rangers, due to his time spent in Glasgow in the late 90s as well as the fact that he is currently available but last night, a claim was made by Italian football journalist Nicolo Schira that there is no movement at all just now between the two parties:

This would add further intrigue to the situation, given that we know Giovanni van Bronckhorst is a clear contender and the favourite.

With Gattuso reports being played down just who else will be in contention? That is the detail on Ross Wilson’s shortlist that everyone is eager to learn of, but it is understood that Derek McInnes is not being pursued despite certain reports from the Scottish tabloids.

Rangers are said to aiming on a relatively quick appointment but if it takes until the middle of next week, then time will be required. As much as everyone wants the new man in place for Hampden next weekend, it is more important that the right choice is made in securing the next Rangers manager.
