Giovanni van Bronckhorst needs to plan ahead to avoid a difficult situation regarding Alfredo Morelos.

The Dutchman was adamant on Tuesday that he was not tempted to introduce the Colombian against PSV at Ibrox.

In terms of the Champions League Playoff first leg, nothing was truly lost in terms of the outcome. That will be decided in Eindhoven next week but the Rangers manager has some thinking to do regarding the talisman Morelos.

Yes, he is still seeking sharpness and match fitness following his injury, but it was a bold call to leave him on the sidelines. GvB pointed to the significant contribution and form of Antonio Colak as the reason for not wanting to change and in addition to another goal, he impressed in other aspects in what was probably his most complete game in Gers colours so far this season.

Say next week, Colak scores again and is leading the line well in Eindhoven but the tie is still level with around 20 minutes to go. Will Gio stick with the Croatian as well as keeping Morelos in the shade? That would be a huge gamble to leave out such a talented player.

Conversely, if Rangers are trailing into the second half with ‘The Buffalo’ amongst the subs, it would be almost certain that he will be sent on to the pitch. Alongside Colak or like for like? It is far from an impossible situation, on both counts, that will need some planning and preparation from the manager to avoid an unwanted situation.

The solid form of Antonio Colak, who is proving to be a fine finisher, is most welcome but it’s difficult to see a lasting scenario with Morelos reduced to second choice. Hopefully the winner in this intriguing saga will be Rangers with both strikers pushing each other to show their very best.
