Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is on the hunt for more defenders in the transfer market this summer after the departure of Bruno Alves from the club.

The Gers boss confirmed that the Portuguese veteran’s contract has been mutually terminated this week, making room for another signing after an already busy summer of signings.

So far the Ibrox side have brought a massive nine players to the club, six on a permanent basis and three on loan for the season. The defence has already been the priority, with four of the signings defenders or goalkeepers.

However, Gerrard is looking for more depth in the centre of the defensive line.

As quoted by The Daily Star, the Liverpool legend said:

Bruno’s contract is being terminated mutually. That’s happening today I believe so both parties are really happy and we both move on.

He’s about to be unveiled at Parma and we wish him all the best.

Yes, there are areas I’d still like to improve – central defender. With Bruno leaving we need extra cover there.

The big contender for that position at this point is Jake Cooper, who is a major star at English Championship side Millwall. Sky Sports reported yesterday that Rangers had firmed up their interest for the player with a £3m bid.

Will Gerrard’s investment in defence pay off this season?
