Katic transfer talk makes case for fan media defence

|

If the weekend has taught us anything, it’s that the Scottish mainstream media has no idea what is going on at Ibrox when it comes to potential comings and goings in the transfer market.

Vital Rangers has looked at our centre-half corps before and identified Niko Katic as the man most likely to depart the club this summer, however, a spell out on loan to aid his recovery from ACL knee surgery was always going to be on the cards.

Reports that the Croatian international had been told to find a new club are wide of the mark, yes, his form in 2020 was below his usual standard, and what he is capable of, but he has shown in displays against Celtic and in the Europa League – especially versus Legia Warsaw, when he was colossal – that he has all the attributes to be an outstanding defender.

He has his limitations, especially his ability on the ball but those of a certain age will remember that Craig Moore, who became a rock at the heart of a treble winning defence on his way to accumulating twelve domestic trophies for Rangers, was far from the finished article at a young age, only reaching his full potential in his mid-twenties.

An SPFL loan would be great for Katic – who is adamant he sees his future at Ibrox – somewhere like Hearts or Hibernian, where there is still an expectation to win most weeks plus he would be guaranteed to play whenever he is fit, a key factor towards him making a full recovery from his operation and rediscovering the form that saw him become an integral part of Steven Gerrard’s squad and much loved by the Gers support.
