One of Steven Gerrard’s biggest Rangers decisions over the last week has been the one to install James Tavernier as the club captain for the 2018/19 season, replacing fellow full-back Lee Wallace.

After Wallace’s bust up with Graeme Murty and the Rangers hierarchy at the tail-end of last season, the writing was always on the wall with regards to his status as leader of the first team squad.

Tavernier has worn the armband on plenty of occasions since February, but had not officially ousted Wallace.

The manager was hugely impressed with his leadership qualities in pre-season, believing he has set the standard in terms of training and performance.

The right-back was excellent in the side’s first competitive action of the new season last night against Macedonian side FK Shkupi.

Fans certainly seem pleased he has been named captain, with a massive 72% of respondents to a poll we published earlier this week believing that the new boss has made the right decision.
