New Chairman but the status-quo remains.

Image for New Chairman but the status-quo remains.

Upon analysing the event of the past 19 hours or so, it’s becoming pretty clear that at Ibrox, the status quo very much remains in place.

Alastair Johnston, our new chairman, is a wealthy man who through his association with the huge sports media player IMG has managed the likes of Arnold Palmer and even player a part in the success of Tiger Woods. Arguably, we have one of the most respected individuals in sport as chairman of our great club.

Speculations continues that the club will change hands imminently and in my personal opinion, I still think that it will.

However, what can be taken from the appointment of Alastair Johnston as chairman?

Right now, diddly-squat, I’m afraid.

Rangers’ new chairman has been involved with the club for over 5 years. The media expertise, the sports-promotion knowledge, the potential for him to develop new income streams for the club and improve it’s overall image has very much been there for that length of time.

He was, however, instrumental in securing the investment of Dave King and Joe Lewis into the club.

But to assume that all of a sudden, Mr Johnston’s chairmanship is going to open doors that his previous role was unable to jimmy open is naive to say the least.

Whatever anyone’s opinion of Sir David Murray is, I refuse to believe that he hasn’t already attempted to utilise Mr Johnston’s contacts and ability in the past, I don’t believe that some sort of stampede is going to be created by Mr Murray standing down.

Things may change during the course of the coming days and weeks – don’t be surprised if I end up contradicting myself.

It appears as though reality and how the changing of the guard in the board-room has been presented are two very different things.

Alastair Johnston has a CV which suggests he is no mug, I sincerely hope that this isn’t John McLelland Mark II.
