Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has spoken on speculation linking him with the Goodison Park hotseat, prior to the appointment of his old mentor, Rafa Benitez.

In an interview with ESPN’s Mark Ogden, the Liverpool legend nailed his colours to the mast, putting clear blue (red) water between himself, his Liverpool credentials and the notion that he was or would be in the future, a contender for the Everton job.

Gerrard’s words further demonstrate his loyalty and strength of feeling toward the Anfield club – they also keep him in the picture and in people’s minds as a future manager of the Reds, that is the unspoken point from the current Ibrox gaffer.

Never

Ogden asked Gerrard if it was equally surprsing that his name was linked as well as Benitez’ but he refuted that by responding;

“I don’t think it’s equally surprising because Rafa was not born in the city, he is not a Red through and through. He hasn’t played against Everton or competed against them for 20 odd years so I think that both situations are very different.”

“I wasn’t very surprised to hear that Rafa was linked to the Everton job, but I was shocked and surprised that my name was,” stated Gerrard.

He continued, “I’m not aware where it came from, whether it was paper talk or whether there was any truth in the reports at all but it is never a possibility as far as I am concerned.”
