Rangers gaffer Graeme Murty has said he would understand if Carlos Pena decided on a return to Mexico given his somewhat underwhelming start to life in Scotland.

Having come in under head coach Pedro Caixinha in a £2.5million deal with CD Guadalajara, he was in effect the Portuguese’s marquee signing but he’s only taken in 13 games having been used somewhat sparingly.

In that time though he has returned five goals.

The player himself has been quoted by Mexican press saying he wouldn’t rule out ‘a plan B option’ which could include a return to his country.

Sky Sports having Murty admitting that he’s slipped down his pecking order in recent times, but following Pena’s comments although he hadn’t spoken to him, he would understand why he may want a return.

‘No we’ve not spoken yet but all players, when it comes to January, will be looking at their options, no matter whether you have a four-year deal or are in your last six months. Every player when the transfer window opens will be looking at making sure they secure the best future for themselves and their family. I understand that – that’s the nature of the beast.’

Murty went on to say.

‘So if you come to me and say that ‘X player’ has been notified that this is going to happen it wouldn’t really surprise me. We just need to be honest and open with the player and be flexible enough to react properly.’
