Alfredo Morelos. Another international call up, thousands of miles travelled, hope restored, important Rangers games missed, another sub from the coach. A total waste of everyone’s time.

What must he be thinking.

In Colombia’s 0-1 loss to Peru yesterday, the Rangers frontman was omitted from the squad altogether. Under pressure national team coach Reinaldo Rueda clearly isn’t a fan of El Bufalo given the continuation of the pattern we have witness previously, including during the Copa America last Summer.

For Colombia, they have now scored just one goal in their last five games. Morelos still can’t get a look in.

Back at Ibrox, the club had to do without their man against Livingston, same today in Dingwall and most crucially, for the Old Firm as things stand. The striker should return in time to be in contention for the squad against Hearts on Sunday 6th February.

This appears to be be an untenable situation with something due to give. The coach’s future is far from guaranteed but what about Morelos?

He simply can’t be happy at being brought home to effectively be ‘covid cover’ in the squad. On Tuesday, Los Cafeteros will travel to Argentina and many of us would be thinking if our man doesn’t get assurances about involvement, he should be on the plane back to the UK but for now, that seems unlikely.

In this situation, Rangers are effectively powerless as in their wisdom, the SPFL decided to play the current fixtures during a scheduled FIFA international window. Perhaps, a quiet word will be had with Alfredo when he returns to reflect on the situation.

It is so frustrating when he does not feature and Rangers lose out, overall.
