Alfredo Morelos is never far from the headlines, Thursday nights under the lights in particular seeming to bring the best out of him – Mats Hummels the latest in a long line of experienced internationals to come off second best to El Bufalo.

The Colombian has an incredible record in European football with 31 goals in 59 games in the Europa League alone, this goes up to 32 in 61 when you include his goal against Malmo in Champions League qualifying earlier this season.

The scary thing is, he also has 17 assists in the 61 games – and should have had another against Borussia Dortmund – making him one of the most prolific strikers in the competition over the last few years for both scoring and crating goals.

Speaking to ESPN Colombia’s Sports Centre, via The Rangers Review, Morelos revealed that he wants to stand alone in the competion as it’s top goal scorer, however, what was more interesting were his remarks about his commitment to his country, after missing the last Old Firm game plus other fixtures to spend his time sitting in the stands, it appears to have been an experience that won’t stop him from answering the call once again:

“As a player, I feel proud to accompany the national team even in the stands.

“I feel happy personally because I am always supporting my teammates.

“The last two results weren’t good, but that is football. We have to keep going, we have experienced people, there are two games left and we have to try our best to make it to the World Cup.

“I will always want to be there. Wearing the shirt is the best thing.”

It was hugely frustrating seeing us underperform without our best player in Morelos’s absence, however, there was little we could do about it, thankfully, the next break includes European games so the domestic league takes a break and we won’t have to cope without him.

We are far from a one man team but Morelos’s record under Van Bronckhorst speaks for itself, he is our best striker and we are stronger with him in the line up – let’s hope that his contract gets extended so that he can continue breaking records in a Light Blue shirt.
