An outside perspective has suggested that Rangers do have the capability and means to spend in the January transfer window.

Against a backdrop of uncertainty around Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s position, Rangers supporters are rightfully expecting some kind of response from the board in terms of backing or sacking the manager. Other concerns abound regarding the use of any potential transfer chest given how money has been used previously but the squad needs help, that is clear.

With several players entering the end of their contracts this season as well as others underperforming, there is a myriad of questions to be answered.

One of them could be if there is a budget to spend in January and finance guru Ken Patullo of the Begbies Traynor consultancy believes that the recently posted accounts show that there is resources available to be used on players, as told to the Scottish Daily Express:

“I can’t see why Rangers can’t go out and spend big in January whether there is a new man in charge or Gio van Bronckhorst is still there.”

“Since then they have sold Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey which looks like bringing in over £30million and they will earn around £25million for getting into the group stage of the Champions League. So there would appear to me that the money is there to go and strengthen the squad.”

Balance

The accounts showed a generally positive picture but those details were enhanced with the anomaly of getting to a European final as well as the welcome kick stat of player trading. That can be set against the one-off settlement in terms of the Sports Direct legal wrangle as well as ongoing loans, some settled and others in terms of ongoing obligations.

January is also not the best month to be doing significant business compared to the Summer but Rangers should be organised and ready to strike on targets identified to improve the current crop. The present nine point gap at the top of the Premiership is not conducive to a title race so it could be a case of bedding in newcomers to hit the ground runnng for next term in what is a depressing but looming reality.
